Google Chat app gets a new design for Android users

New icon and colors

Google, the American company, launched the new redesigned version of its instant messaging app “Google Chat” for Android users. The redesign included introducing a new icon for the app that matches the design of the icons in other Google apps, with various colors inspired by the company’s logo.

New floating bar and tabs

Google removed the traditional bottom bar, and added several tabs for the home page, direct messages, spaces, and mentions in a new floating bar at the bottom of the interface. Google did not put any labels on the tabs and only used clear icons that can be easily navigated between. The name of the tab appears at the top of the interface when opened. Next to the new bar, there is a small floating button to create a new conversation or space.

Previous design and comparison

The bottom bar in the previous Google Chat app contained only two tabs: chat and spaces, with a relatively large floating button above it. The icon of the app was very similar to the old Hangouts app.

Google Workspace integration and features

Google Chat app is one of the core apps in Google’s Workspace suite. It focuses mainly on communication via instant messages between groups and teams. Users can also make video calls and meetings through another app, which is Google Meet.

Future plans and updates

Google started launching the Chat app in 2020 for all users to gradually replace the Hangouts app, which it officially announced closing at the end of last year. The new design of the app is expected to be released for iPhone and iPad users later, as Google works to provide a unified user experience across all operating systems.
